Remove background noise step by step
For when you want the best possible result.
- 1
Open your file
Drop the recording on this page or on the studio. MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM audio all work. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Listen to the original first
Press Space to play and use the Original / Enhanced switch (or the B key). Note what bothers you: a steady hiss, a fan, traffic, or noise only in the pauses.
- 3
Set Noise Suppression
It starts at 80%. Steady noise (hiss, fans) can go higher. If your voice starts to sound thin or watery, go down to 50–60%.
- 4
Set the Noise Gate
If noise is still audible between sentences, raise the threshold a little (for example from −45 dB to −40 dB). If the ends of words get cut off, lower it.
- 5
Even out the level (optional)
Switch to Advanced and turn on the compressor, or pick the Podcast preset, so quiet words are not lost.
- 6
Trim the start and end
Drag across the waveform to select, then press T to keep only the selection, or Delete to remove it. Ctrl+Z undoes.
- 7
Export
Choose a target: Podcast (−16 LUFS), YouTube (−14 LUFS), Voiceover (−19 LUFS) or Call recording, then MP3 or WAV.
What can be removed
Easy
Steady noise: hiss, fans, air conditioning, hum, fridge and computer noise.
Usually fine
Traffic, wind rumble, distant voices and keyboard noise between words.
Hard
Music, loud chatter right next to the mic, and heavy room echo. These can be reduced, but not fully removed.
Record with less noise next time
Get closer
Keep the mic about a hand’s width from your mouth. Your voice gets louder, the room gets quieter.
Switch off fans
Fans, AC and heaters for the few minutes you record.
Use a soft room
Curtains, a sofa, a bed or a wardrobe full of clothes cut echo.
Silence notifications
Phone and computer alerts are hard to remove later.
Questions
Can I remove background noise without installing software?
Yes. VoiceStudio runs in your browser. You can also install it as an app if you want it offline.
Is there a background noise remover that is free, with no watermark?
Yes. No watermark, no signup and no time limit.
Can I remove background noise from a video?
Not directly yet: VoiceStudio opens audio files, not video files.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in a current Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
Why does my voice sound underwater after cleaning?
Noise Suppression is too strong for that recording. Lower it to around 50–60%.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. All processing happens on your device.
