How to make your mic sound better

Make a laptop, AirPods or phone mic sound better
Laptop mic
It sits next to the fan and far from your mouth. Raise the laptop to face height, sit closer, and keep Noise Suppression at 80% or higher.
AirPods and Bluetooth earbuds
When the mic is on, Bluetooth drops to a call-quality mode, so they sound muffled. Cleaning removes noise, but it cannot bring back that lost detail. If you can, record with the phone or laptop mic instead.
Phone mic
Phones are better than people expect. Hold it like a call, a little below your mouth so you do not breathe straight into it.
Wired headset
The mic sits close, which is great. Move the boom slightly to the side of your mouth to avoid pops.
Webcam mic
Usually far away on top of the screen. Lean in, or use the Podcast preset for stronger noise removal.
USB mic
Speak into the right side (many are side-address), and turn the gain down if the loud parts distort.
What a mic enhancer can and cannot do
Software can take away what is not your voice: hiss, hum, fans, traffic, and the noise in your pauses. It can also make your level steadier and add a bit of clarity with EQ. That covers most of what makes a cheap mic sound cheap.
It cannot add detail the mic never captured. It reduces room echo, but it cannot make a bare room sound like a booth. Distance matters most: halving the distance to the mic does more than any setting.

How do I make my mic sound better for free?
Get closer to it, turn off fans, and record in a soft room. Then run the recording through VoiceStudio to remove the remaining noise and even out your level.
Why does my AirPods mic sound so bad?
When the mic is in use, Bluetooth headphones switch to a call mode with much less audio detail. That is a Bluetooth limit, not something an app can undo afterwards.

Will it make a laptop mic sound like a USB mic?
It will sound much cleaner and steadier. It will not get the full, close sound of a good mic, because that depends on the hardware and distance.
